Hi.
I’m Drew McManus

“I hear that every time you show up to work with an orchestra, people get fired.”

Those were the first words out of an executive’s mouth after her board chair introduced us. That executive is now a dear colleague and friend but the day that consulting contract began with her orchestra, she was convinced I was a hatchet-man brought in by the board to clean house.

I understand where the trepidation comes from as a great deal of my consulting work for arts organizations involves due diligence, separating fact from fiction, interpreting spin, as well as performance review and oversight. So yes, sometimes that work results in one or two individuals “aggressively embracing career change” but far more often than not, it reinforces and clarifies exactly what works and why.

In short, it doesn’t matter if you know where all the bodies are buried if you can’t keep your own clients out of the ground, and I’m fortunate enough to say that for 30 years, I’ve done exactly that for organizations of all budget size from Qatar to Kathmandu.

Corporate Experience

I’m the founder and CEO of UpStage Technologies, a cutting-edge Ticketing Customer Relationships Database platform designed for nonprofit arts and culture organizations. I also run Venture Industries Online, a designated division of UpStage Technologies that focuses on a managed website development solution for nonprofit arts and culture organizations.

I oversee an online media group that includes ArtsHacker.com, InsideTheArts.com, and am the founder and author of The Adaptistration Network, which has more than 5,000 published articles over 20 years. In 2001, I established ArtsAdminJobs.com, a jobs board that specializes in nonprofit administration listings. As a purely philanthropic effort, it is entirely free for both employers and candidates to use and it still manages to generate positive revenue!

For three decades, I’ve worked as an arts consultant specializing in nonprofit governance, executive review, labor relations, strategic planning, and technology.

Media Reputation

“It has been both an honor and a pleasure to serve as a valuable resource for numerous media outlets. So far, I’ve been quoted in over 100 publications as an expert in nonprofit governance, labor relations, or technology.”
